Why reef sound matters
Healthy reefs are not silent. They are full of acoustic cues from fish, snapping shrimp, water movement, grazing, and other reef life. In reef-restoration research, playback of healthy reef soundscapes has been shown to attract fish to degraded reefs and has been studied as a cue that may support coral larval settlement.
Many reef fish can detect sound and vibration. Healthy reef noise may help signal that a habitat is active, complex, and biologically rich.
